4.7 cm PaK(t) Selbstfahrlafette auf Panzer I Ausf. B (Sd.Kfz. 101)

Sd.Kfz. 101

Origins and Development

One of the first German tank destroyers, this conversion mounted a captured Czech 4.7 cm anti-tank gun on a Panzer I Ausf. B chassis. About 202 vehicles were converted in 1940.

Design Features

  • Open-topped fighting compartment
  • No armor for the gun crew
  • High silhouette and exposed loader

Combat History

Used in France and the early stages of Operation Barbarossa. Performance was limited by poor protection and light gun by mid-war standards.

Performance Evaluation

A stopgap measure, it was effective briefly but phased out as better self-propelled guns became available.
