Tank, Light, M5 (Stuart)

USA, 1942–1943
Type: Light Tank
Chassis: Welded hull based on M3
Main Armament: 37 mm M6 gun
Armor: 25–51 mm

The M5 was a streamlined light tank that replaced the radial-engine M3 Stuart with twin Cadillac V8 engines and an automatic transmission.
It introduced a welded sloped-front glacis for improved protection and crew space, while retaining the small M3A1 turret with twin triangular hatches and a 37 mm gun. The M5 served in North Africa and Europe but was quickly overshadowed by better-armored vehicles. Its agility and mechanical reliability were praised, though its light armor and gun limited frontline effectiveness.
